Sustainability @ Allegheny: Compounding Compost

How does a small liberal arts college like Allegheny go from producing 180 cubic yards of compost to 2000+ in just one year? With a little help from our friends.

Allegheny College is on the path to climate neutrality by 2020. In keeping with the College’s mission, Allegheny’s sustainable turf management plan for its 265 acres depends on using enough natural fertilizer to eliminate the use of pesticides or other chemical sprays. We found that making our own fertilizer would be both sustainable and cost-effective.

By partnering with local sources, we’re creating relationships that are beneficial to both the College and the surrounding community.
