The Steven Farrelly-Jackson Prize

The Steven Farrelly-Jackson prize is given in honor of Philosophy faculty member Steven Farrelly-Jackson and his commitment to teaching philosophy at Allegheny College. It is awarded to a junior major or minor for exceptional academic achievement and contribution to the general life of the department.

Student Societies

Phi Sigma Tau

Phi Sigma Tau is the International Honor Society for Philosophy, and Allegheny College has been a member since 2001. Phi Sigma Tau publishes a semi-annual journal, Dialogue.

The purpose of Phi Sigma Tau, as stated in its constitution, is as follows:

  • To serve as a means of awarding distinction to students having high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy
  • To promote student interest in research and advanced study in this field
  • To provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit
  • To encourage a professional spirit and friendship among those who have displayed marked ability in this field
  • To popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public

Eligibility requirements for membership of Phi Sigma Tau at Allegheny include:

  • Completion of at least THREE courses in philosophy (Please note that membership does NOT require a student to be a declared major or minor in philosophy)
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.2
  • A minimum GPA of 3.5 for the philosophy courses
