Funding is available for students requiring financial assistance to conduct research (individually or in collaboration with Philosophy faculty) and for student travel to attend and to present at academic conferences that engage with philosophy. These funds may provide full or partial funding up to $1000 per student for research or conference travel, and these resources may be supplemented through other funding sources at Allegheny. The funds also support the purchase of research materials to be used by students in pursuit of the Senior Project in Philosophy. In most cases, funding up to $500 is available.
The James F. Sheridan, Jr. Memorial Fund was established in memory of Jim Sheridan – Allegheny College Professor of Philosophy and alumnus (Class of 1950) – by his friends, family, and beloved wife Nancy.
The Professor Bill Bywater Endowment was established by Barbara Creed in honor of her brother, who began teaching at Allegheny in 1968. The Bywater Endowment has supported student conferences and other events at Allegheny.
An application for Sheridan and Bywater funding should include an overview of the research project, an explanation of the research to be undertaken, and a budget. Contact the Program Chair of Philosophy for additional information.
Additional financial support for research is available from:
