Senior Melissa Mattwig, a Biology and Neuroscience double major and a French and Spanish double minor, has received a $20,000 Boren Award to study Swahili in Tanzania for one year, part of the new African Flagship Languages Initiative of the Institute of International Education.

Allegheny College Senior Receives Prestigious Award to Study Swahili in Tanzania

The Global Citizens Scholars program was featured in the Fall 2017 issue of Engaged, published by the Allegheny Office of Civic Engagement.  The program integrates study in civic engagement, global learning, and U.S. diversity with the aim of developing a globally mindful & committed citizenry sensitive to community & cultural contexts.  (Below is a link to the full issue — the GCS article begins on page two.)

Engaged Magazine Fall 2017

Enjoy a free lunch and stimulating discussion of German immigration issues with Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science, Nathan Henceroth, who will deliver “To Be, or Not To Be… A German” at the MENA House in the Max Kade International Wing (North Village C #102) at 12:15pm on Tuesday, Sept. 26.  He will take a brief look at immigration, citizenship, and German identity, and how the German notion of citizenship differs from the French, British, or American.  For more information, please contact Milton Guevara (guevaram@allegheny.edu).

The Modern & Classical Languages Department kicked off the 2017-18 academic year in style with a picnic on the lawn outside Ruter Hall on September 13th.  Guests included language majors & minors, faculty, staff and their families.  Chair Barbara Riess introduced new faculty, teaching assistants, and staff and welcomed several “friends of the department” with whom the department has a close working relationship.  A highlight of the afternoon was the recognition of the many students in attendance who had studied abroad and hearing them talk about their life-changing experiences.

Reeck publishes chapter in Oxford Handbook
