Evacuation

Internal Evacuation:

When conditions inside of the building are safer that outside (Severe Weather) or when ordered to move from Primary Location to designated Secondary Location.

External Evacuation:

When conditions outside of a building are safer than inside.

  • Remain calm.
  • Do not run or use elevators.
  • Take the closest and safest way out.
  • Use secondary route if primary one is blocked or hazardous.
  • If the emergency is a gas leak or a hazardous material spill, take the route that will keep you upwind of the problem area.
  • Assist those needing special assistance.
  • Do not stop for belongings or records.
  • Do not walk on roads to avoid responding emergency vehicle(s).
  • Check for injuries – report injuries to emergency personnel.
  • Take attendance – report to emergency personnel.
  • Remain at the assembly area in case emergency personnel need more information or need to ask questions (i.e. missing persons).
  • Wait for further instructions from emergency personnel.

Evacuation Of Persons With Disabilities

In cases of emergency, persons with disabilities may need assistance with building evacuation.

Ambulatory Individuals

Persons with disabilities who are ambulatory but who might impede rapid building evacuation should be guided to an exit or stairwell and assisted in evacuating the building once a clear passage has been established.

  1. Guide/assist them to the designated evacuation area.

Non-Ambulatory Individuals

The following steps should be taken to assist with evacuation of a non-ambulatory individual (such as a person using a wheelchair):

  1. Move the individual to the Disabled Refuge Area near a stairwell and await assistance if there is no immediate danger.
  2. Contact Public Safety at 814-332-3357 or Ext. 3357 and provide as much information as possible as to the location and condition of the individual.
  3. If the hazard becomes life-threatening, move the individual to a room and close the door. Inform Public Safety immediately of the new location of the individual.

DO NOT USE ELEVATORS FOR EVACUATION IN ANY FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCY THAT MAY AFFECT THE BUILDING ELECTRICITY.
