Studio Art Major Study Away Advising Guide

The Global Education Office and the Art Department have compiled the following information for Studio Art majors to assist in planning for a semester of study away. Students should let their Academic Advisor know as soon as possible about their plan to study away so they can help fit this experience into the student’s graduation plan.

Academic Planning Prior to Going Away

Successfully Complete the Following Courses Before Studying Away

To be eligible to study away, students in the Studio Art major must successfully complete the following courses at Allegheny prior to studying away:

  • FS-101, FS-102 OR SWS-105 *wording TBD
  • If pursuing the New York Arts Program, it is strongly recommended that students have completed at least one art history course prior to the semester of departure. If applying for the studio residency within the New York Arts Program, it is additionally recommended that students have taken a minimum of two studio arts courses before studying away.

When should I study away?

It is recommended that students in the Studio Art major study away in the spring of  sophomore year, the fall of junior year, or the spring of junior year. Because the Studio Art major requires a two-semester comp, Studio Art majors cannot study away during fall of senior year.

Allegheny’s graduation requirements state that a student’s final 16 semester credit hours before graduation must be taken in academic residence on campus, therefore study away during the second semester senior year is not allowed without the permission of the Dean’s Exemption Committee.

Plan Around Your Junior Seminar/Senior Project

ART 580 Junior Seminar is offered every semester, so Studio Art Majors may study away either fall or spring of junior year. Due to high enrollment demand in this class, students should reach out to the Department Chair as soon as they have plans to study away so that they can obtain priority enrollment in ART 580 for the junior year semester that they are in residence at Allegheny.

Courses that Must Be Taken on Campus

The following courses in the Studio Art major cannot be taken during a study-away program:

  • ART 580
  • ART 600
  • ART 610

How Studying Away Counts Towards the Major

Studio Art majors may focus on coursework in studio practice, theory, art history, or a combination of the three while they study away.

There is no limit on the number of credits from study away that can transfer back towards the Studio Art major.
