Course description
An interdisciplinary exploration of Sicily, grounded in the island’s complex history, embrace of and resistance to multiculturalism, and position as a destination and transit location for migrants. As the Mediterranean’s largest island, Sicily has been a strategic objective for countless civilizations and peoples. Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards, French, and Italians are just a few of those that colonized this island, each of whose influence continues to reverberate. Our travel course considers Sicily’s dazzling history, art and architecture, religions, and performance traditions, alongside organized crime, the political landscape, and current efforts to address and welcome migrant peoples.
