Join Allegheny Professors Hannah Standiford and Kevin Geyer on a two-week course taking place in Indonesia during Summer 2027
Course Description
An immersive experience in Indonesia to examine cultural and environmental concepts. As an archipelago and the world’s fourth most populous nation, Indonesia is both culturally and biologically diverse. Rising sea levels and population size call attention to the importance of sustainable practices in this region as people navigate the sharing of resources in ways that align with their local values. This GL emphasizes the relationships between the performing arts and sustainability in Indonesia, asking students to consider how these two topics can be mutually informative. Students experience natural sites with native biodiversity (e.g., hiking and walking tours), visit human-modified landscapes (e.g., farms and plantations), observe and participate in performing arts and cultural activities (e.g., playing gamelan and learning how to make batik), and visit important historical sites (e.g. temples and burial grounds). Students will connect with Indonesian sustainability experts and culture bearers firsthand.
Academics
Students who successfully complete this course will earn two Allegheny credits. Students are required to attend pre-departure sessions as assigned.

Please note: Graduating seniors who participate in the program are not eligible to receive institutional financial aid.
The Reverend and Mrs. Berges International Fund supports international students here on campus, semester long study away students, and GL Seminar participants. Students must 1) have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial aid office and 2) Have never studied away previously.
Students are encouraged to apply for externally funded scholarships. Those who receive the federal Pell Grant are eligible for the Gilman Scholarship.
