Join Allegheny Professors Dr. Mark Cosdon and Dr. Shannan Mattiace on a three-week course taking place in Italy during Summer 2024.
This travel course is an interdisciplinary exploration of Italy grounded in the Italian language, Italy’s historic past, and how history’s impact is experienced today.
The small, walled hill town of Amelia, one of the oldest in Italy, is the course’s starting point, where students will live with families for one week and study Italian intensively at Eurolinks, a local language school. Time is also devoted to learning about Italian customs, mores, and manners first-hand through a range of activities and field trips.
Next, students spend three days in Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance. After Florence we head south to Naples, one of Italy’s oldest cities, to begin thinking about the classical past. Our time includes a day-long excursion to Pompeii and to the top of Mount Vesuvius. From Naples we travel to the island of Capri, one of the world’s most historically significant destinations. The trip concludes with six days in Rome, where students deepen their familiarity with late Medieval and Renaissance history, as well as the classical traditions. Sustained units in Florence, Naples, and Rome focus on Italy as a complex and politicized destination for immigrants.
Students who successfully complete this course will earn four Allegheny credits.

- $1,200: Non-refundable reservation fee; due after program admission in November 2023.
- $8,816*: Tuition rate TBC (summer 2023 tuition was $2,206/credit); due March 31, 2024. *ESTIMATED – final cost will be posted November 2023
Students will receive an $2,000 GL Scholarship. Students may also be eligible for additional need-based grants in the amounts of $1,000 or $2,500. The financial aid office can provide specific details to individual students about qualifying for these additional grants. Please note: Graduating seniors who participate in the program are not eligible to receive institutional financial aid nor are students who have already studied abroad.
The Reverend and Mrs. Berges International Fund supports international students here on campus, semester long study away students, and GL Seminar participants. Students must 1) have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial aid office and 2) Have never studied away previously. If you meet these requirements, apply now.
