Statement on Recent Racial Injustices – May 31, 2020

May 31, 2020

To the Allegheny College Community:

Our hearts grieve for the tragic death of George Floyd. Our hearts grieve for our local community and for our country. Along with you, we are heartbroken and grief-stricken by the repeated racial injustices suffered by Black people in Minneapolis, in Meadville, in Atlanta, in New York City, and in so many places over the past weeks and months. For our students, we see you, we hear you, we hurt alongside you, and we are here for you. We know we have work to do in our own institution to create a place where you feel safe and heard; we need you to work with us to do that. We have much work to do, but it is work we must do; it is the only hope there is for our campus, our community, and our country.

We want to remind you of the resources available to you all through the College, including our Counseling and Personal Development Center, the IDEAS Center, and the office of the Dean for Institutional Diversity.

Please take care of yourselves and take care of each other.

Sincerely,

Kristin Dukes
Dean for Institutional Diversity
