Nicci Micco grew up in Bessemer, Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Pittsburgh. She graduated from Allegheny in ‘98 with an English major and a Biology/ Personal Health & Wellness student-designed double minor. When asked about Allegheny, Nicci reminisces, “What I love about Allegheny’s educational approach is that it’s multi-disciplinary—which is how my brain works naturally.” It turns out, Allegheny’s multi-disciplinary approach would help Nicci later with her career.
Nicci eventually attended graduate school to earn her master’s degree in nutrition and food sciences. But, just two weeks after graduating from Allegheny, Nicci started working as an editorial assistant at MORE magazine, a spin-off from Ladies’ Home Journal, where she had interned the previous summer through the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Now, married and with two adorable little boys, Nicci works as the Content Director for Meredith Content Licensing, a division of Meredith Corporation in Shelburne, Vermont. Meredith Corporation publishes EatingWell, Parents,Better Homes and Gardens, MORE, and Diabetic Living, and other national magazines.
At Meredith Content Licensing, Nicci oversees the editorial and the content strategy for partnerships and programs that leverage the content of Meredith brands. As she explains it, “Some are simple licensing deals: you might see EatingWell recipe cards at the supermarket; others are custom print projects—magazines specifically for supermarkets; still others, are full-blown digital programs, like a 12-week healthy lifestyle program for people with Type 2 diabetes.”
Currently, Nicci is developing a weight-loss program that pulls content from EatingWell and Fitness magazines. The program, according to Nicci, “combines nutritional education with a focus in behavioral change, so the opportunity to combine my writing background with my health-focused background has been awesome.”
The English Department congratulates you on your success, Nicci! Thanks for sharing your story!
