Where

IMC is situated in the historic old town of Krems, a mid-sized Austrian city with a population of around 25,000. Nestled along the Danube River in the scenic Wachau Valley, Krems is home to approximately 15,000 students attending various universities. The city is conveniently located about an hour by train from Vienna, the capital of the country. The University itself is spread across three campus locations within Krems, all of which are within a 15-minute walk of each other or easily reachable by bus.

The historical campus of “International Campus IMC Piaristengasse” is home to the study programmes of Tourism and Leisure Management, Export Oriented Management, International Business and Export-oriented Management, Marketing (& Sales) and Digital Business Innovation and Transformation. The “IMC Campus Krems”, the official headquarters of the IMC, with most of the administration departments as well as all their study programmes for the departments Health Sciences and Life Sciences and all German taught programmes for the Business Department. Lastly, campus IMC Gozzoburg, is home to the International Relations Department and the International Welcome Center as well as the study programme of International Wine Business.

Academics

As an exchange student at IMC Krems there are several English-taught programs suitable for Allegheny students, including Applied Chemistry, Business Administration, Informatics, International Business Management, Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, StartUp and Sustainability Management, International Wine Business, and Tourism and Leisure Management. Additional courses taught in German are available for students with at least C1 proficiency. Special courses such as Intercultural Competence, German language, Austrian/European business perspectives, Introduction to Gender & Diversity, and Sustainability are available to exchange students. Students are not able to enrol in specific Health Sciences courses. Proficiency in German is not required to apply.

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly in university courses open to visiting international students and take those classes alongside local Austrian students. There are additional courses available specifically for international students focused on language and culture.

IMC Krems has two main semesters; winter and summer. Winter semester is equivalent to Allegheny’s Fall semester that runs from mid September to the end of January. Summer semester is equivalent to Allegheny’s Spring semester that runs from mid February to end of June. Allegheny students are eligible to apply for IMC Krems’ spring term or two academic semesters. Students who are interested in IMC Krems for the Fall semester should please contact Global Education.

Course Credit

At IMC Krems, courses are measured using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The normal workload per semester is 30 ECTS, which is equivalent to 15 Allegheny credit hours. IMC Krems requires a completion of courses worth a minimum of 15 ECTS credits, however, Allegheny requires students to complete at least 24 ECTS credits.

Courses

The schedule of the IMC courses as well as detailed course descriptions will be available for you approx. in August (for the fall term) and in January (for the spring term) – you will be informed via email by the International Relations Office. Syllabi are provided in the course language (English or German). For a list of some course offerings, please visit IMC Krems website here.

Housing & Student Life

IMC has a network of outside dormitory companies they work with. Dormitories within the network are within a 20 minute walk of the IMC campus and one is located directly at the Campus Krems location. The International Relations team will help students with the search for housing.

For this program, students who are approved will receive an email link from IMC Krems to complete their application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Check directly on their website (linked at the top of this page) for deadline information. For more information about the study away application process, please visit the application steps page.

Visa Information

U.S citizens are required to apply for a visa before departure. Students who are nationals of non EU/EEA countries, need a residence and travel visa (type C visa for stays of up to 90 days; type D visa for stays of 91 days to six months) for entry and residence in Austria. This visa has to be applied for at the official Austrian representative authority (embassy, consulate) in your home country before leaving for Austria, and it will be issued by this authority. Confirm visa details on the consulate website as regulations are subject to change.

Non-U.S./EU/EEA citizens should consult their home country’s Austrian embassy or consulate.
