Eligibility

The program is open to Allegheny juniors and seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Coursework related to development and/or Senegal or West Africa, or volunteer or social services experience is preferred. 2 years of college-level French is required.

Where

Senegal has long been a crossroads where African, Islamic, and European civilizations have met, clashed, and blended. Today, Senegal is still seen as a bridge between Africa and the West, and also where Senegalese people remain deeply attached to traditional values and cultures. This program is based in Dakar, Senegal’s cosmopolitan capital. Heated by the African sun while surrounded on three sides by cool Atlantic waters, Dakar has a climate often described as “eternal spring”. It is known as a city of contrasts. Businessmen and tourists, European clothes and traditional dress, colonial-style villas and modern skyscrapers, supermarkets and small shops, posh residential areas and shantytowns all coexist.

Academics

The program’s combination of classes, field trips, field experiences/internships, and research link experience with theory and provide a critical analysis of development efforts and their effectiveness, sustainability, cultural appropriateness, and equity. Students participating in the program develop a profound, firsthand understanding of the complex economic and social issues at work in Senegal.

The courses and internships build on a common knowledge base built by pre-departure readings and assignments. Once in Dakar, students study as a group for 2 months and then participate in a 4-week field placement. Students on the yearlong option build the field experience to an internship. The Academic Year curriculum includes a 4-credit International Development internship complemented by a research project (often the basis of a senior project or major/minor requirement).

All participants go through 1 week of orientation, 7 weeks of coursework in Dakar, 6 weeks of internship or research project, and 1 week of a final seminar.

Academic Structure

Course taken with other MSID students. The internship or research project will be with an organization engaged in grassroots work related to your chosen international development theme.

Course Credit

You are required to take 16 credits for fall or spring semester. Add 4 credits for optional French language pre-session.

Courses

For a full list of course offerings, visit MSID’s website here.

Student Life

MSID participants live with host families throughout the program. The homestay is an important venue for practicing French and for gaining insights into Senegalese culture. Meals consist of fish and rice at least once every day, with few fruits and vegetables.

Classroom and office facilities are located in a one-story complex called the West African Research Center (WARC), located a few miles from downtown. Most students study either at WARC or at other nearby libraries. A number of computers are also available at the program facilities.

Eligibility

The program is open to students from all academic majors. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required to participate.

Where

Philadelphia is like a big, small town. Thanks to the street grid system designed by Philadelphia Founding Father William Penn, the city is easy to navigate and perfect for day-to-day living. A ten-minute walk from The Philadelphia Center, located in the heart of Center City, will take you to half a dozen theaters, several major art and science museums, South Street’s shopping, Old City’s galleries, the Kimmel Center, the Italian Market, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and a variety of restaurants. A slightly longer walk takes you to the renowned collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Fairmount Park, the nation’s largest urban park (four times the size of New York City’s Central Park), where you can bike, hike, run, row, and rollerblade.

Academics

This program is a unique and valuable 16-week program in the fall or spring semester that allows undergraduates to engage in critical investigations of their own abilities, objectives, and values in order to help discover their personal and professional direction in life. It combines city living seminars, academic electives, and internships. Students usually work 32 hours/week in an internship they choose and create individualized learning plans of action based on what they want to achieve and learn while participating in the program. These internships available to students are in the following areas: Applied Arts and Design, Business and Economics, Communications, Education, Fine Arts, History, Law & Government, Medicine and Health, Physical Sciences, Psychological and Social Sciences, Social Work, and Women’s Studies. Faculty and Staff from The Philadelphia Center along with the workplace supervisor will help facilitate and evaluate this experience through learning plans, portfolios, and other activities.

Students enrolled at TPC during the fall or spring semester will work with the Career and Placement Director to be placed at an internship (4 days a week, typically Monday – Thursday) that best meets their academic and career goals. You will receive eight academic credits for your internship and it’s included class, The Field Placement course. The Field Placement course is a companion to your internship experience, allowing you to critically reflect upon your work experiences and network with your peers at The Philadelphia Center. Students will also have the opportunity to create a personalized learning plan that helps them guide their internship experiences, skill acquisition, and personal/professional development.

In addition to an internship and Field Placement course, you will take a Signature Seminar called “Cultures & Communities” and conduct directed research. The Seminar is taught by TPC Director / Professor Greg Goldman. The seminar, field placement course, and directed research courses take place once a week, typically Fridays, and help diversify your course of study beyond the internship experience and to introduce students into their urban community in Philadelphia.

With the help of the TPC staff and faculty, students learn how to communicate with property owners, understand what to look for in an apartment, and review and sign a lease. Responding to current interests and student needs, The Philadelphia Center offers a variety of programs, events, workshops, and discussion groups including: Career Development; Difference, Diversity, and Identity; Homelessness in Philadelphia; Philly 101: An Insider’s Guide to Philly; Potluck and Movie Night. Where

Washington, DC is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city. It never stops buzzing with activity, a cultural center that impresses people with its beauty, and the focal point of politics and government in the United States.

The Program

The Washington Semester Program was established in 1947 and hosts each semester more than 450 students, who come from every state and from more than 50 countries. The program offers tracks in several distinct areas: American politics; public law; justice; foreign policy; peace and conflict resolution; international business and trade; economic policy; journalism; international environment and development; the arts; education policy and special education; transforming communities; and women and public policy.

Each track consists of an 8-credit seminar (two courses), a 4-credit internship, and a 4-credit research project. This allows the students to gain experience in their field and also build contacts for networking once they have graduated. In addition, students participating in specific programs may take national and international trips. For example, International Environment and Development semesters have offered 3-week visits to South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Costa Rica; the Peace and Conflict Resolution program includes a trip to Ireland/ Northern Ireland or the Balkans; and the Arts track takes students to New York City for 3 days. These expeditions are invaluable experiences where students learn to apply ideas they have discussed throughout the semester and have the opportunity to travel to unique places.

Academic Structure

For a full list of course offerings, visit American University’s website here.

Eligibility

The program is open to students who are at least first-semester juniors. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to participate. Students are also required to have taken an introductory course within the area that they intend to study.

The selection process for the Washington Semester Program is very competitive and only two students per semester will be approved to participate.

Application Process

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, the program requires a nomination from Allegheny’s Global Education Office before students can apply directly to the program. So, students must complete the Allegheny approval application and then wait for further instructions to apply to their program. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. After a student has been approved by Allegheny, the Global Education office will send the student’s nomination and/or application documents to the program abroad. Students will receive instructions directly from the host program’s visiting student office with their next steps. For more information about the study away application process, please visit the application steps page.

Student Life

While studying in Washington, D.C., students live in university-leased apartments (Berkshire Apartments) or off-campus housing (WISH Housing) near the main campus. The campus is located in upper northwest Washington, next door to homes of senators and other dignitaries. The campus is only one block away from the Metro, the subway system that serves Washington.  While in the Washington Semester Program, students have the opportunity to eat at the American University dining halls or cook their own meals in their apartments. Participants are responsible for paying the American University-Washington Semester Program directly for all room and board charges.

In the evenings and on weekends you will have time to enjoy the sights of Washington, many of which are free of charge. They include the monuments on the National Mall, the Smithsonian Museums, the National Zoo, and the National Gallery of Art; cultural activities at the Kennedy Center and around the city; and lectures given by nationally and internationally known figures. For those people who enjoy the outdoors, there are bike trails and parks, as well as the Mall.

Eligibility

2.75 GPA, at least 4 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent.

Where: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Have your pick of shops, vibrant neighborhoods, theaters, and cafes in “the Paris of South America”.  The city earned its nickname thanks to its stately architecture and a steady influx of European immigrants, giving visitors glimpses of Europe through architecture and neighborhood life.  A vibrant port city, Buenos Aires is also the world’s leading Spanish language publishing center.  With a population of 13 million, it has the cultural intrigue found only in cities of this size and prestige.

Academics

Established in 1993, this program is for motivated students with high-proficiency Spanish language skills who desire a complete cultural and academic experience.  It includes specialized CIEE courses and local university courses at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA), and/or Universidad Nacional de Arte (UNA).  All courses are taught in Spanish and CIEE faculty is associated with some of the most well-respected local universities.

The program gives students the opportunity to experience university life at UBA, UCA, and/or UNA, and the freedom to enroll in a vast selection of courses.  All students sign CIEE’s Community Language Commitment and agree to speak only Spanish to foster language proficiency and understanding of Argentina’s culture and society.

Every student is required to take a Spanish language course based on placement test results. The remaining courses are selected from a range of CIEE elective courses and host institution courses at the local universities.

Academic Structure

CIEE elective courses taken with other CIEE students. Host institution courses are taken with local students.

Students reside in a homestay with an Argentine family. Host options may be traditional and nontraditional, including nuclear families with young children, single professionals, young couples with no children, and older couples whose children visit but do not live at home. The typical commute between homestays and CIEE Buenos Aires can range from a 15-minute walk to a 30-minute public transportation ride.

Local home family stays include two meals per day: breakfast and either lunch or dinner.  Host families and students arrange their own meal schedules.  Students are responsible for the remaining meals, either preparing them at home or eating in one of many restaurants and cafés throughout the city.

Application Process

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Check directly on their website (linked at the top of this page) for deadline information. For more information about the study away application process, please visit the application steps page.
