Where: Seville, Spain

Seville has its origins in the trade routes controlled by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. Romans, Goths, Muslims, and Christians established their capital here before it became the most important city in Southern Europe and gateway to the Americas in the 16th century. The commercial hub of its region, the city preserves many traces of its past and traditions. With 700,000 residents, Seville offers a large variety of cultural activities that range from the Flamenco Bienal and the European Film Festival to alternative theatre venues, bars with live music, beautiful streets and open spaces, and, of course, one of the most respected bullrings in the world.

Academics

Established in 1986 for business and Spanish majors and minors, this program helps students improve their language skills while they explore economic and business management in Spain and the European Union. Learning takes place through coursework, lectures, internships, and company visits. CIEE Business and Society courses (SEBS) are held at the Universidad de Sevilla School of Economics and Business. Students can also take one or two regular university courses with Spanish students at the School of Economics and Business (University of Seville) or at the University of Pablo de Olavide (UPO). Prior to departure for Seville, all students take a CIEE online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score. Students agree to speak only Spanish to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

Students take five to six courses, for a total of 15-18 semester credits, including:
One two-week intensive Spanish language course
SPAN 3503 CSCS Intensive Spanish for Students of Business and Economics.
Independent Research Project (optional)
Business Internship (optional)
Four to five-semester elective courses
A minimum of two CIEE semester courses from the areas of business, economics, management, and marketing (see course list below)
CIEE semester courses from any other areas (see course list below)
Cursos Concertados semester courses at the University of Seville
Up to two host institution semester courses at the University of Seville, University of Pablo Olavide, or EUSA School of Communications

Academic Structure

CIEE classes and Cursos Concertados at the University of Seville share the same calendar. They are scheduled Monday through Thursday and meet twice a week. CIEE classes are open to CIEE students only. Cursos Concertados are only open to students from US study abroad programs in Sevilla. Direct Matriculation courses can also meet on Fridays.

Academics

Students choose courses in English at CIEE’s partner school – EUSA School of Communications – from its three main degrees: Audiovisual Communication; Journalism; and Publicity and Public Relations. Along the way, students learn about Spanish culture with a range of projects and activities. Whether they are total beginners or have some grasp of the Spanish language, students are encouraged to take an optional Spanish language course.

Students enroll in five to six courses for 15-18 credits to be selected from:

CIEE courses
EUSA School of Communication courses
Spanish language courses
Content courses in English and/or Spanish
University of Seville (US) (available as of the Spring 2024 semester) courses

Where: Rennes

With its population of 60,000 students, Rennes is a perfect setting for study in France. Just an hour and a half west of Paris by train, and 55 minutes from the sea, Rennes is the capital of Brittany. Economically very dynamic, the city is known as a center for technology and is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in France. The city offers an excellent variety of cultural events and provides study-abroad students the opportunity to learn the distinct Celtic traditions particular to this region of France.

Academics

This French language immersion program is designed for intermediate to advanced-level French students who want to take their language skills to the next level while learning about French culture and society. Prior to coming to France, students take an online placement test. Once on-site, they take an intensive two-week language and culture course that includes 30 hours of language and civilization coursework, and 10 hours of cross-cultural analysis and cultural adaptation meetings. Upon completion of the preliminary language and culture course, students are placed in one of six language learning levels, each with a prescribed set of courses at the Centre International Rennais d’Etude du Francais pour Etrangers (CIREFE) at Université Rennes II. All students are encouraged, regardless of their language level, to consider auditing a regular course at the Université Rennes II; however, students in the advanced language levels (C1/C2) may opt to take one or two regular university courses for credit alongside French students. Students agree to speak only French during the program to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

Academic Structure

Students take most of their classes at CIREFE with other international students. Our students often describe their experience at CIREFE as studying at an international school and enjoy this mutually enriching diverse environment and intercultural experience. The average class duration is 2 hours. The average class size is 14-18 students depending on class subjects and levels. All CIREFE courses are taught in French. Université Rennes II classes are open to French students. Advanced CIEE students may enroll in one or two courses at Université Rennes II and must attend lectures, complete assigned work, and take exams as scheduled. Classes meet Monday through Friday. Students usually take 2 two-hour classes per day.

Where: Shanghai

Perched on the banks of the Huangpu River and the East China Sea, Shanghai is China’s largest city by population, and a global hub of culture, commerce, and finance. Massively redeveloped over the past 20 years, the city boasts many of the world’s latest and greatest. The list includes: uber-tall buildings stretching up in the new financial district; and the world’s fastest-growing rapid-transit system featuring the world’s first commercial high-speed Maglev train.

Academics

Courses are focused on contemporary business issues affecting China and the role of the world’s second largest economy on international business today. Company site visits and other networking opportunities allow students to apply theories learned in class and contextualize the country’s economic rise within China’s largest business hub. Students investigate pressing business issues and trends with some of China’s most respected professors, such as Oliver Yang, the corporate social responsibility and government relations manager for the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Students who have not completed one semester of college-level Chinese or demonstrate equivalent proficiency must take Conversational Chinese.

CIEE Global Institute – Shanghai is located on East China Normal University (ECNU)’s downtown Putuo campus, which is known as the “Garden University” for its beautiful grounds by the Liwa River. Chinese language courses are taught by full-time CIEE faculty members, including the CIEE language director, and adjunct teachers from the East China Normal University College of International Chinese Studies. A committee of specialists in teaching Chinese as a second language holds these courses to the highest educational standards.

All Chinese language courses and area studies electives are managed by CIEE and are designed exclusively for CIEE study abroad students. Some area study courses may include a limited number of ECNU students to increase cross-cultural and academic exchange.
