The Academic Program at National Taiwan University

Allegheny students can spend the fall or spring semester at National Taiwan University.  CET Taiwan gives you access to the best parts of study abroad—intensive language classes,  internship opportunities in Chinese and English-speaking environments, and a location that balances life in a big city with quick getaways to nature. And with Taiwanese roommates who bring language and culture into your home life, it won’t be long before Taipei feels like your new home away from home.

Intensive Language Learning: Whether you are new to the Chinese language or already have several years of college-level experience, you take on an intensive curriculum with small group classes, and plenty of individual attention. Leave Taipei with the knowledge and study habits to set you up for long-term success.

Add on an internship: Taipei’s job market boasts a wide variety of opportunities, including in the political, educational, business, and civil society sectors. If you choose to intern for your elective, the course component complements on-the-job learning to not only build your résumé but also give you the framework and context to take ownership of your experience.

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly with National Taiwan University’s Chinese Language Division (CLD) in a class that meets once daily for 3 hours.

Course Credit

Students choose between 4 or 12 credits of Chinese language, then select up to four electives to meet the total 13 to 16 recommended credits.

Japan Study at Waseda University

Program Dates
Term Start Date End Date
Full Year Mid-September 2024 Early August 2025
Fall 2024 Mid-September, 2024 Early-February, 2025
Spring 2025 Mid-March, 2025 Early August, 2025

About this Program

Japan Study enables students to become international citizens as they explore Japan in depth, build language skills, and experience Japanese culture. Living with a Japanese family, taking courses at Waseda University, and participating in a cultural internship offer different windows for experiencing and understanding the complex society of contemporary Japan.

Academics

Language study is at the core of the Japan Study experience and students are required to take six credits of Japanese language each semester at the Center for Japanese Language (CJL). Students also take courses at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) at Waseda University. SILS offers a wide array of courses taught in English, covering various topics in Japanese and Asian studies, as well as content courses across the curriculum. Indeed, while course selection varies somewhat each year, students can find classes on subjects ranging from Discrete Mathematics to The History of Pantomime. Waseda professors, who come from Japan and around the globe, teach these classes.

The Cultural Internship (CI) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to experience new facets of Japanese culture firsthand. For approximately four weeks during winter break (February/March), students are immersed in a cultural or volunteer experience with local institutions throughout Japan. Many students describe the Cultural Internship as one of the highlights of Japan Study.

Before departing for Japan, students will take the CJL (Center for Japanese Language) Level Check Test, which ranks their Japanese language ability on a scale from 1 to 7. Students Level 5 and below must enroll in 6 credits of language courses each semester. Students who score at Level 6 are only required to take 3 credits of Japanese language, and those scoring Level 7 and passing a listening and reading test or JLPT N1 are exempt from taking Japanese.

Enrollment in 8 credit hours of SILS lecture courses at the intermediate or advanced level is required for students taking 6 credits of Japanese. Additional SILS credits are required for students who test out of Japanese. Students have the option of taking up to an additional 6 credits, in either SILS courses, CJL courses, or an additional foreign language (Spanish, Korean, Chinese, etc.). Typical course-loads consist of 6 credit hours of Japanese Language per semester and 12 elective course credit hours. Students are required to take at least 8 credits of SILS lecture courses and 6 credits of Japanese language courses.

Academic Structure

Courses taken with local or other international students.

Course Credit

In SILS (School of International Liberal Studies), the one-year/semester program is called Study Plan 3 (SP3). SP3 students are required to take at least 8 credits of SILS lecture courses and 6 credits of Japanese language courses.

Courses

For a full list of course offerings, visit Waseda University’s website here. Search through their course catalog with the instructions on the website.

Eligibility

One semester of college-level Japanese or equivalent. Since Japanese is not offered at Allegheny, the requirement can be met via a summer language course or self-study which is verified by a program faculty member.

Housing & Student Life

During their time in Tokyo, students live with a Japanese host family. This allows them to learn about Japanese society through immersion in the most basic social grouping in any culture: the family. Students improve their language skills, discuss current events, participate in holiday gatherings, and enjoy everyday activities with their host families. It is not uncommon for students to keep in touch with their host families after leaving Japan. Indeed, some alumni are still close with their Japanese families decades later, inviting them to their weddings and introducing them to their children.

Each host family is unique. Students have lived with small children, retired couples, large extended families, or just a single person. Homes may be old and traditional or modern and Western. Some host families speak fluent English, and some know only basic words and phrases. Learning to adapt and be flexible is an integral part of the experience abroad, and most students consider their home stay to be one of the highlights of their time in Japan.

Students are interviewed upon arriving in Japan and matched with the host family that best suits their lifestyle and expectations. Families furnish breakfast and dinner, and students typically have private rooms. In special circumstances, alternative living arrangements are allowed. Arrangements must be proposed during orientation and approved by the Resident Director and Program Coordinator in Japan. Contact our office for more details.

Fees & Costs

Students are charged Allegheny tuition, a $800 off-campus study fee, independent living room rate, and a Gator Gold meal plan. Allegheny financial aid, except work-study/campus employment, is applied toward the program. The program fee includes housing, breakfast and dinner, commuting expenses in Tokyo, and Cultural Internship. Extra costs include round-trip transportation to Japan (approx. $1,800-$2,000),  Japanese National Health Insurance (about $25/month), lunches, books, cell phone contracts (about $20-$80/month), and personal expenses.

Application Process

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Border Studies in Tucson, Arizona

Program Dates

  • Fall 2024: August 20 – December 8, 2024
  • Spring 2025: January 21 – May 4, 2025

Eligibility

2.75 GPA. Although there is no formal language requirement, one year of college-level Spanish is recommended prior to joining the program.

Where

The Border Studies Program is centered on rigorous academic work, including classroom study, meaningful community engagement, and personal experiences and reflection. You will participate in two core seminars that explore the topics of settler colonialism, approaches to decoloniality, critical race theory, queer theory, transnational feminisms, women of color and indigenous feminisms, neoliberalism, mass incarceration, environmental justice, food sovereignty, social movements, and abolition.

Based in Tucson, the Border Studies Program is situated in a complex and critical geographic bioregion, offering direct exposure to social, cultural, ecological, and political issues in a local, regional, and international context. Located in a dynamic multinational border region, Tucson’s history of cultural, environmental, and social struggle has shaped the interventions of myriad individuals, organizations, and communities working to protect the unique ecosystem, cultural identities, and lives of people who inhabit the arid lands of Sonora, Arizona, and beyond.

The program also includes a travel component, which may take you to central and southern Mexico, El Paso, and throughout the Arizona/Sonora borderlands, where you will learn from community members and organizations and engage in service to support grassroots efforts occurring at different sites. Furthermore, you will be immersed in an extended field study placement (internship) with one of many community organizations and schools in the Tucson area. The field studies class, which you will take in conjunction with your internship, will help you to contextualize the social justice issues that community organizations and groups contend with in the borderlands. Lastly, through the Spanish class and associated community engagement, as well as home life with host families in Tucson, you will continue to strengthen your Spanish language knowledge, practice, and/or comprehension.

Academics

The program curriculum includes four courses that together result in 18 credits:

  1. Movement and Movements: A Political Economy of Migration Seminar (4 credits)
  2. Routes y Raíces: Towards Collective Power (4 credits)
  3. Español in the Borderlands (4 credits)
  4. Borderlands Field Study Practicum (6 credits)

Housing and Student Life

Students live with homestay families during the Border Studies Program. The homestay placements are typically with immigrant families who predominantly speak Spanish in the household. The homestay is an enriching experience where you and your family members alike learn and grow together. Members of the host families have personal insight into the issues explored in the program and offer you their unique perspectives on life in the borderlands.

You will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your preferences and the program, and we will then match you with your family. Some participants prefer more independence, and others prefer a more family-oriented experience.

The homestay has the potential to be a very important learning experience, and we view your living experience as an essential part of the overall educational program. Many Border Studies students have made long-lasting friendships with their host families over the years.

Where: Cologne, Germany

Located on the Rhine River, Cologne is an ideal site for study in Germany. It is rich in art and culture, and although its history dates back to Roman times, it is a modern and vibrant center. Known as the broadcast center of Germany, Cologne is also one of the country’s most cosmopolitan cities, with large ethnic neighborhoods and international arts festivals. Cologne is considered a university city, with more than 100,00 students studying at more than 20 institutes of higher education.

Academics

The Cologne Global Study Program (CGSP) is an academic certification program designed for students of the University of Cologne’s partner universities. It combines classes on Contemporary European Studies (taught in English) and German language courses. The program’s main goal is to provide an academic environment for exchange students who do not speak German but wish to study at the University of Cologne. Core courses in Contemporary European Studies are clustered in three different subject areas: History & Culture, Economy & Society, and Politics & Law. The core course catalog is updated each semester. Students are also enrolled in German as a foreign language courses during the semester and have the option to attend a pre-semester language course. The program consists of German language classes for beginners or advanced German classes if you already studied German.  Students may also choose to take European Studies electives in the wider University curriculum.

Courses

For a full list of course offerings and more information about the program, see CGSP’s brochure here and here.

Credits and Grades

The University of Cologne uses the European Credit Transfer System, ECTS for short, and you divide the ECTS credit value in half to get the US credit value.  Most modules in the CGSP are 3 ECTS credits which converts to 1.5 credits at Allegheny. German language classes are typically 9 ECTS so they come back as credits at Allegheny.  If students complete the entire CGSP and receive letter grades for all of their courses equivalent to a C or better, they will earn 30 ECTS credits or 15 credits at Allegheny for the entire program.

Eligibility

2.75 G.P.A. No German language requirement. Students must meet with the Allegheny German department before applying to the program.

Housing & Student Life

Allegheny students are guaranteed housing and are expected to live in one of the 84 dormitories managed by the Koelner Studentenwerk. All housing is located off-campus and is managed by the Koelner Studentenwerk and not the University.

With over 50 different student organizations to choose from and a variety of extracurricular activities to participate in, students will always find something to do in the vibrant city of Cologne.

Visa Information

U.S. citizens will apply for a residency permit upon arrival. Please coordinate with the university regarding your permit. Non-U.S. citizens should consult with the Global Education office regarding the visa application process.

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, the program requires a nomination from Allegheny’s Global Education Office before students can apply directly to the program. So, students must complete the Allegheny approval application and then wait for further instructions to apply to their program. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. After a student has been approved by Allegheny, the Global Education office will send the student’s nomination and/or application documents to the program abroad. Where: Madrid, Spain

Madrid’s influence in politics, education, science, entertainment, media, fashion, and arts make it an important international metropolis, and a major hub in Southern Europe. Spain’s capital city is also its largest, with a historic center dating back to the Hapsburg Empire, and world-renowned art museums. A huge variety of tapas bars, dance shows, concerts, outdoor parks, soccer matches, ethnic neighborhoods, and contemporary theater and cinema make it a lively place to live and learn.

Academics

The Engineering and Society program is designed for engineering students who want to learn Spanish and gain insight into Spanish and European culture while immersing themselves in Spanish university life. This program allows students with no knowledge of Spanish to take classes at a Spanish university in English in a variety of topics not only in the area of Engineering but in Business,  Economics, Sociology, Communications, Political Science, and Law, among others. Engineering courses follow a lecture format for the first four to six weeks then switch to lab work or smaller group sessions. CIEE students may also take Education Abroad courses, which focus on Spanish language and culture. Students can choose to take Study Abroad Program (SAP) courses in English, and/or Curso de Estudios Hispánicos (CEH) courses in Spanish. Students must enroll in a minimum of 4 courses.

Academic Structure

UC3M classes are taken in English or Spanish, depending on the student’s language level – regular university classes are open to Spanish and other international students. Engineering School courses are taught in English and follow a lecture format for the first four to six weeks, and then switch to lab work or smaller group sessions. It’s common for a course coordinator to instruct with a co-teacher who alternates teaching lectures with performing lab research. Most courses also incorporate online coursework.

Where: Seville, Spain

Seville has its origins in the trade routes controlled by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. Romans, Goths, Muslims, and Christians established their capital here before it became the most important city in Southern Europe and gateway to the Americas in the 16th century. The commercial hub of its region, the city preserves many traces of its past and traditions. With 700,000 residents, Seville offers a large variety of cultural activities that range from the Flamenco Bienal and the European Film Festival to alternative theatre venues, bars with live music, beautiful streets and open spaces, and, of course, one of the most respected bullrings in the world.

Prior to departure for Seville, all students take a scheduled CIEE online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score.

Students must take five to six courses, for a total of 15-18 semester credits, including:
One two-week intensive Spanish language course, depending on results from a placement exam.
