Eligibility

This program is open to students who are at least first-semester sophomores. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to participate. They may review applicants with a 2.8-3.0 under exceptional circumstances.

Where: Cork, Ireland

Cork is the Republic of Ireland’s second largest city after Dublin with a population of about 185,000 people. For our students who want to study in Ireland but wish to be in a smaller setting where everything is walkable, Cork offers a small-town, quaint atmosphere. Cork is known for its eclectic music scene, its mid-18th century covered market – one of the oldest in Europe, and as a burgeoning food lovers paradise with all sorts of modern Irish and international restaurants to pick from. The River Lee flows right through the city and before reaching the Celtic Sea, passes by the nearby town of Cobh, on an island in Cork city’s harbor, known as the Titanic’s last port of call.

The University College Cork is just a 10-minute walk away from the central historical area of town. UCC has housing both on and near campus.

Academics

In addition to excellent offerings in computer science, UCC has course offerings within their College of Arts, Celtic Studies, and Social Science, College of Business and Law, College of Science, Engineering, and Food Science, and the College of Medicine and Health. Of particular note to Allegheny, there are undergraduate courses available to visiting students in computer science, data science and analytics, digital humanities and information technology, psychology and computing, public health, film, music and theater, government and politics, psychology; biochemistry; mathematics; physics, and more.

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly in university courses open to visiting international students. Students take classes alongside local Irish and other international students.  Lecture class sizes at UCC tend to be large, but each module (what they call classes at UCC) also has weekly tutorial sessions which are small sections of the main class.

Course Credit

UCC uses the European Credit Transfer System, ECTS for short, and most modules at UCC are 5 ECTS. Students take 5-6 modules for a normal, full-time load of 25-30 ECTS per semester.

Housing & Student Life

UCC has six different residences on campus and Allegheny students typically live with other international students and Irish students in their apartment-style housing. Rooms have either shared or private bathrooms. At UCC, when they refer to a room that is “ensuite” that means it has a private bathroom. Most of the residences are called “self-catered” meaning students living in them will not have a meal plan and will cook on their own in shared kitchens. Students have easy access to food and grocery delivery services from local supermarkets. Learn more about the UCC Residences. Housing can be found in Cork but it’s especially important to pay attention to deadlines. Students are encouraged to apply for housing right away.

Application Process

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Visa Information

U.S. citizens do not need to apply for a student visa for their study abroad period in Ireland. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their home country’s Irish embassy or consulate. All international students must register with the local immigration authorities during the first few weeks after their arrival in Ireland.

Fees & Costs

Below find information on estimated costs for a semester abroad. You will receive a bill from Allegheny College, as you normally would, for the amount shown under “Costs Paid to Allegheny College.” All other study away program costs will be paid directly to a non-Allegheny entity and are listed in part two below. These amounts are estimates and will vary depending on individual choices. A total estimated cost of attendance for this program is shown at the bottom.
