Francis of Assisi: The Great Rebellion

Abstract:

This historical research study looked at the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis, the great rebel, was an important figure in the 13th century for the Catholic Church. He is the patron saint of animals and began the religious order known as the Franciscan Friars Minor. In his early life, Francis rebelled against his “sinful ways” and began to live his life in devout poverty. His rebellion, centered on honest poverty with integrity, defied societal norms and changed how one thinks about the poor. The study focused on the following questions: (1) How Francis became a rebel within the Catholic Church, (2) How did this rebellion develop, and (3) How this rebellion transformed into a prominent religious order in the Catholic Church along with how Francis’ personal agenda defied Church authority.
