Call for Participants—Faculty Learning Circle IP Course Tag (Spring 2017)
Allegheny College’s Office for Diversity & Inclusion, in conjunction with the Provost’s Office, invites continuing faculty across divisions, and other educators interested in pedagogical approaches, to collaboratively explore pedagogical strategies for courses meeting the new International & Intercultural Perspectives distribution requirement. This is especially important in shaping our curricular culture for the long-term. This Learning Circle in Spring 2017 will be co-facilitated by Ishita Sinha Roy (associate professor, Communication Arts) and Hoa Nguyen (assistant professor, Economics). IP Learning Circle dialogues will focus on translating the AAC&U Global Learning Value Rubric criteria into pedagogical strategies and practices. The criteria include creating Global Self-Awareness, encouraging Multiple Perspective Taking, facilitating Cultural Diversity and Personal and Social Responsibility, studying Global Systems, and testing Knowledge Application in tackling global issues. These discussions will draw from ongoing national debates, classroom experiences, and targeted readings, with the goal of generating concrete and pragmatic group outcomes.

Six Learning Circle sessions will take place from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. on Tuesdays through February and March 2017. These dates are: Feb. 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21, March 7, March 14, and March 28 with a culminating workshop on Saturday, April 1, that involves the group producing specific teaching resources and activities with an IIP focus. Participation will be capped at 10 faculty members, and we require that participants commit to attending all six sessions plus the follow-up workshop. Lunch will be provided at all sessions and at the workshop. Every participating faculty member will have a formal letter from the Office for Diversity & Inclusion placed in their personnel files, recognizing their service in advancing this strategic priority of the college.
If you are interested in participating, please complete the brief IP Learning Circle Application by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2016. You will be notified of your acceptance no later than Thursday, December 1, 2016. Please direct questions to Ishita Sinha Roy at iroy@allegheny.edu.
