You have given me a priceless treasure, and that is opportunity. I have a single mother and a younger sister. There were many nights when we didn’t have enough to eat and there were times when I had to go through the cold without a proper coat. Despite my burdens, I pushed hard in school. I knew education was going to get me out of the recurring cycle. However, as high school was coming to an end I didn’t think I’d be able to continue my education. I was working double shifts back to back, I sacrificed sleep to make sure my family was okay. I would arrive early at school and sleep for 30 minutes to get through the day.

With conflicted emotions and with encouragement from my mom, I applied for college. Honestly, I thought it was a waste of time. There is no way I’d be able to afford it. We were already in debt. Then Allegheny’s acceptance letter arrived. I was happy, yet I knew I wouldn’t be able to go. How could I? Then I was alerted that I was awarded your scholarship. I burst into tears. I was so happy. You have helped me tremendously and have given me the greatest gift I could ever receive. Everyone is so invested in the students here. Professors and peers have been nothing but welcoming since I have arrived. Even though it has only been a week, I have learned so much! I’m brimming with excitement! I haven’t felt this happy in a long time and I humbly thank you. You’re doing a wonderful thing and it inspires me. It shows that there are people out there that are willing to help and give everyone a fair shot at this show called life.

Thank you so much.
