Single Voice Reading Series

The Single Voice Reading Series provides students with an opportunity to hear and meet nationally known writers. Readers have included John Updike, Carolyn Forché, Tobias Wolff, Jane Hirshfield, W.D. Snodgrass, Richard Blanco, Robert Olen Butler,  Henri Cole, Edward Hirsch, Afaa Michael Weaver, Tim O’Brien, and Mark Doty. Look at the archives for a more complete list.

Ashley Wurzbacher (’08) is the author of How to Care for a Human Girl and the short story collection Happy Like This, which won the 2019 Iowa Short Fiction Award and was named a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” honoree and a New York Times Editors’ Choice. Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, she currently lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and teaches at the University of Montevallo.

Katherine Locke (‘09) is the author of the critically-acclaimed This Rebel Heart, The Girl with the Red Balloon, a 2018 Sydney Taylor Honor Book and 2018 Carolyn W. Field Honor Book, as well as The Spy with the Red Balloon. They are the co-editor and contributor to This is Our Rainbow: 16 Stories of Her, Him, Them and Us, as well as It’s A Whole Spiel: Love, Latkes and Other Jewish Stories. They also contributed to Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens and Out Now: Queer We Go Again. They live in Philadelphia.

Lauren Holmes’s short story collection, Barbara the Slut and Other People, was published by Riverhead Books in 2015, and named a best book of the year by NPR, Gawker, Publisher’s Weekly, and more. Her work has appeared in Granta, where she was a 2014 New Voice, and in Guernica. She is an Assistant Professor of English at Allegheny College.

Khaled Mattawa is the author of numerous books of poetry, and a critical study of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. His most recent collection of poetry is Fugitive Atlas. Mattawa has coedited two anthologies of Arab American literature and translated many volumes of contemporary Arabic poetry. His awards include the Academy of American Poets Fellowship prize, the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, and a MacArthur Fellowship. He currently teaches in the graduate creative writing program at the University of Michigan.
