Conflict in the Subcontinent: The South African War and
the Creation of the Union of South Africa
Abstract:
The South African War was fought from 1899 to 1902. It was a war between the British Empire and the Boer Republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State. The conflict and its immediate aftermath shaped the future of South Africa for generations to come. South Africa came about because of the conflict between the Boers and British. The struggle for supremacy in the African subcontinent from the war to the debates after it, created the South African nation and peoples. South Africa came into being through the creation of the Union of South Africa, which was brought about by the war and its after years. The issues that determined the future path of South Africa started in the midst of conflict in the subcontinent, involved race relations in society, political rights, culture and identity preservation, and the role of empire. South Africa has never lost the influence the war and union had on the nation and peoples.
