Taking Action Into Their Own Hands: The Struggle for African American Freedom and Citizenship During the Civil War and Reconstruction
Abstract:
This work focuses on the actions taken by African Americans to achieve emancipation and the rights of citizenship during the period of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The work covers the obstacles which African Americans faced to when attempting to enlist into the Union Army along with the impact that their service had on the fight for civil rights after the war. The intention of this work is to show how African Americans took their own steps attain rights and to spread further awareness of their impact on the outcome of the Civil War along with the role they played in challenging the United States Government to pass the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments.
