UPDATE: Utility/Power Failure on Campus

Meadville Water Authority is just completing the the main water line repair on the north side of campus and and the water line should be pressurized shortly.

CAUTION FROM THE WATER AUTHORITY: A loss of positive water pressure is a signal of the existence of conditions that could allow contamination to enter the distribution system through back-flow by back‑pressure or back‑siphonage. As a result, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms.

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using; or use bottled water. You should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. These symptoms, however, are not caused only by organisms in drinking water, but also by other factors. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. Guardians of infants and young children and people at increased risk, such as pregnant women, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems, should seek advice from their health care advisors about drinking this water. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426‑4791.

The Water Authority will inform local residents when the water is safe to drink. An updated message Emergency Message will be sent from Public Safety.

Students, faculty and staff should monitor e-mail, the college web site, social and local media for updated information and further updates.

Research

Research at Your Library

Supporting student and faculty research is a core mission of the library at Allegheny College. We offer a variety of resources and services to support your research.

Visit the Research Desk in Pelletier Library, Monday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. whenever classes are in session, for face-to-face assistance. Or take advantage of many other ways the Pelletier librarians can help with your research needs.

Classroom visits

Librarians will work with faculty to prepare classroom sessions designed to help students develop and reinforce both information literacy and research skills. Presentations are tailored to each course’s level and subject matter.Ideally, faculty should schedule sessions with Research Instruction Services as they prepare their syllabi. This provides the librarians with ample time to prepare an appropriate session.

For librarian presentations, the Pelletier classroom is available for classes of up to 15 students, or the librarian can visit the classroom in person.

RefWorks

RefWorks is a useful way to manage the references and citations you use in your research. Use it to:

  • track which books, articles, and media you find useful
  • take notes about the references you’re using
  • generate citations and bibliographies in the citation style your professor requires
  • connect with the Google Docs add-on to manage citations and bibliographies right in your paper or presentation

NOTE: The first time you use RefWorks, you will need to create a RefWorks account. Use the “Create account” link on the RefWorks login page to do this.

Research Help

Librarians are available to help you research. They can help you narrow a topic for a paper, find scholarly sources, search more efficiently, and navigate the complexities of academic research. Don’t just Google information; let us help you build your search strategy, assess sources, and track citations, to save you frustration and time.

Resources

The library offers online resources to support your research, including:

  • AggreGator, the library’s discovery tool, will help you find both physical books and online resources available to you through the library.
  • Over a hundred different databases containing ebooks, peer-reviewed journals, newspapers, magazines, scanned historical documents, streaming video and music, statistics, and more.
  • Research Guides to assist you in almost every discipline taught here at Allegheny, tailored specifically with Allegheny’s curriculum in mind.
  • Student projects from across the history of Allegheny College, housed by the Merrick Archives.
