Are you interested in religious studies and service? Consider taking Religious Studies 290 next semester. This class will meet Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and will include a spring break trip to Chicago. Here are the details.

This will be an interdisciplinary, semester-long, seminar course focused on the power of interfaith understanding and cooperation with a specific focus on civic engagement and community service. First, students will gain introductory literacy in the history, beliefs, intra-faith diversity, and rituals of three monotheistic world religions; Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Scholar/practitioners from each will present on history, traditions and current practices of their traditions. Attention will be paid to each tradition’s understanding of service toward humanity, all living things, and the planet.
Second, all students will participate in a week-long engagement experience volunteering with faith-based service agencies. All enrolled students, the student Peer Mentors, and the professor will spend the week of spring break in Chicago. Over the course of the week they will volunteer with faith-based service organizations, participate in worship experiences, and learn about the work of IFYC. Third, structured learning after the service trip will focus on helping students integrate and articulate their own commitment to furthering interfaith cooperation in multiple communities: campus, local, national, and global.
