Eligibility
This program is open to students who are at least first semester sophomores and in good academic and disciplinary standing. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to participate.

Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, is a vibrant and historic urban center known for its charming blend of old-world charm and modern innovation. Nestled on the eastern coast of Zealand, flanked by the sparkling waters of the Baltic Sea, Copenhagen is famous for its picturesque canals, cobblestone streets, and colorful buildings.
Academics
DIS offers over 340 courses across 28 programs, making it easy for you to study abroad while keeping up with your academics, or allowing you to explore new topics during your time abroad. Courses emphasize place-based learning through Field Studies which take you out of the classroom to position academic topics within real life scenarios. Your Core Course also includes two faculty-led Study Tours to further contextualize your understanding of topics while in a relevant European destination.
Academic Structure
Early in the semester, you will delve into your academic focus during Core Course Week, in which you travel on a short Study Tour for three days in Denmark or a neighboring country, combined with a two-day seminar in Copenhagen. Later in the semester, you travel again with your Core Course on a week-long Study Tour in Europe.
Course Credit
The credit structure at DIS mirrors most North American institutions. Most courses are three credits, while a few carry one or six credits. Semester students must take a minimum of 12 credits. No more than 15 credits may come from a combination of three- or six-credit courses.

Housing & Student Life
You have four housing options to preference at DIS. All options ensure that you live with English speakers. You are encouraged to maximize your exposure to the local culture and language during the semester, no matter what your housing preference. The living options are Homestay, Living & Learning Community, Kollegium , and Residential Community. Most of the living options provide some form of a meal plan or food stipend, however students are frequently expected to cook several of their meals themselves. Students have easy access to food and grocery delivery services from local supermarkets.
Being a part of a community abroad allows you to meet classmates and locals with various backgrounds, passions, and interests, creating a semester unique to you. Connect with Copenhageners by joining a local organization or activity. Visit the Activity Fair Days at the start of your semester to discover how to involve yourself; opportunities include sports clubs, choirs, LGBTQIA+ groups, religious communities, and more.
From board game nights to bonfires and community dinners, New in Town meetups take place during the first weeks of the semester, and provide an opportunity to experience the city with other DIS students while socializing as the locals do!
Application Process
Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Visa Information
U.S citizens need to apply for a residence permit for their study abroad period in Denmark. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their home country’s Denmark embassy or consulate. All international students must register with the local immigration authorities during the first few weeks after their arrival in Denmark.
Fees & Costs
Below find information on estimated costs for a semester abroad. You will receive a bill from Allegheny College, as you normally would, for the amount shown under “Costs Paid to Allegheny College.” All other study away program costs will be paid directly to a non-Allegheny entity and are listed in part two below. These amounts are estimates and will vary depending on individual choices. A total estimated cost of attendance for this program is shown at the bottom.
