Eligibility

This program is open to students who will be at least first-semester sophomores. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required to participate. Students from any major are encouraged to apply.

Where: Washington, DC

The semester program is designed with students’ professional needs in mind. At its core, this is an internship program, that creates the structure for undergraduate students to explore their career paths with individualized support from the William & Mary (W&M) Washington Center team. This is a flexible program, allowing students to focus on their specific career interests during a semester of their choosing. With students’ well-being and personal growth as central concerns of the program’s development, administrators work individually with students to find their path to career success, fulfillment and work-life balance.

Academics

Classes take place at the College of William & Mary’s Washington Center located in downtown Washington, D.C. Credit bearing internships are located throughout the D.C. region.

Academic Structure

In this small, cohort style program, students take two accelerated classes taught by William & Mary faculty members. Classes are taken alongside other undergraduate students, mostly from W&M, who are also spending their semester away in Washington DC. In addition, students complete a credit bearing internship.

Course Credit

Each accelerated course is worth three Allegheny credits. The internship and its accompanying course is worth 6 Allegheny credits. Therefore, students who complete the program can earn 12 Allegheny credits for each semester. 

Courses

The two accelerated courses are structured to run for 7 weeks each, with one course taking place in the first half of the semester and the other in the second half. These courses rotate each semester and are taught by W&M faculty from various academic backgrounds and disciplines. Each class will expose students to a wide array of pressing issues, breakthroughs, and challenges and lead them in critical thought to create connections between course topics and change in the real world.

Students will also enroll in a hybrid Washington Program Internship Course to translate their internship experiences into focused learning opportunities so students may earn college credit for their hard work and professional growth. Unlike the accelerated courses, the internship and its accompanying course runs continuously throughout the entire semester and is tailored to the interests and needs of each cohort of students. Regardless of the subject, DCSP students and faculty embrace the Nation’s Capital as the scholarly context for their applied learning experiences and immerse themselves in W&M’s extensive network of alumnae, industry experts, and global leaders who call D.C. their home.

Housing & Student Life

Students have the option to live in W&M housing, which is in fully furnished apartments located in Mount Vernon Triangle in the heart of D.C. The building is safe and secure and boasts a fitness center and large common rooms. Students may also live at home, with friends or family, or secure other housing alternatives, as long as they are within the D.C. metropolitan area and are able to commute to class and internship sites.

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. Where: Dublin, Ireland

Studying abroad abroad in Dublin is a great choice for Allegheny students. As the capital of Ireland, Dublin City has just over 1 million inhabitants.

UCD is also one of Ireland’s most diverse universities with 8,400 international students from 140 different countries. 30% of the academic staff at UCD are also from outside Ireland. UCD is situated on 133 hectares of beautiful, green parkland – one of the largest urban campuses in Europe.

UCD Global provides a complimentary Cultural & Social Program for their Study Abroad students. They’ll take you on various cultural nights out in the city and day tours across the island! Music, theatre, and comedy shows; national parks and heritage sites; hiking and cycling trips; castle, cave, and factory tours!

Academics

UCD offers courses in a range of disciplines including Business, Computer Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, Law, Health Systems, Agriculture & Food Science, Pre-Physical Therapy, International Studies, Natural Sciences, and many more.

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly in university courses open to visiting international students. Students take classes alongside local Irish and other international students.  Lecture class sizes at UCD tend to be large, but each module (what they call classes at UCD) also has weekly tutorial sessions which are small sections of the main class.

Students apply and are admitted to one specific school at UCD where they take the majority of their modules. If desired, students can take 1-2 modules outside of their main department to broaden their disciplinary focus of study.

Course Credit

UCD uses the European Credit Transfer System, ECTS for short, and most modules at UCD are 5 ECTS. Students take 5-6 modules for a normal, full-time load of 25-30 ECTS per semester.

Housing & Student Life

UCD has nine different residences on campus and Allegheny students typically live with other international students and Irish students in their apartment-style housing. Rooms have either shared or private bathrooms. At UCD, when they refer to a room that is “ensuite” that means it has a private bathroom. One residence (Roebuck Castle) offers a meal plan for its residents.  The rest of the residences are called “self-catered” meaning students living in them will not have a meal plan and will cook on their own in shared kitchens. Students have easy access to food and grocery delivery services from local supermarkets.

Eligibility

This program is open to students who are at least first-semester sophomores. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to participate. They may review applicants with a 2.8-3.0 under exceptional circumstances.

Where: Cork, Ireland

Cork is the Republic of Ireland’s second largest city after Dublin with a population of about 185,000 people. For our students who want to study in Ireland but wish to be in a smaller setting where everything is walkable, Cork offers a small-town, quaint atmosphere. Cork is known for its eclectic music scene, its mid-18th century covered market – one of the oldest in Europe, and as a burgeoning food lovers paradise with all sorts of modern Irish and international restaurants to pick from. The River Lee flows right through the city and before reaching the Celtic Sea, passes by the nearby town of Cobh, on an island in Cork city’s harbor, known as the Titanic’s last port of call.

The University College Cork is just a 10-minute walk away from the central historical area of town. UCC has housing both on and near campus.

Academics

In addition to excellent offerings in computer science, UCC has course offerings within their College of Arts, Celtic Studies, and Social Science, College of Business and Law, College of Science, Engineering, and Food Science, and the College of Medicine and Health. Of particular note to Allegheny, there are undergraduate courses available to visiting students in computer science, data science and analytics, digital humanities and information technology, psychology and computing, public health, film, music and theater, government and politics, psychology; biochemistry; mathematics; physics, and more.

Queen Mary University of London

Where: London, England

Study in one of the most dynamic, diverse, and exciting cities in the world: London! Situated in the Mile End neighborhood of East London, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is only 20 minutes from central London via the Tube.

Academics

QMUL has fourteen academic schools and 950+ modules (courses) available to study abroad students. Of particular interest for Allegheny’s Public Humanities program, the English department, and the Communications, Media, and Performance department, QMUL offers specific English & Drama focused study abroad programs. These programs include a designed curriculum of courses around a particular academic theme. Also incorporated in these programs is the option to take 1-2 self-selected topics from across the general QMUL curriculum. These thematic programs include: 

  • Shakespeare in the World: Then and Now
  • London and the World 
  • Writing in the Twentieth Century
  • Introduction to the London Scene 
  • London and the Arts

Another program for visiting students (called “associate students”) at QMUL allows for credit-bearing internship opportunities run in collaboration with QMUL’s partner, Arcadia University, the College of Global Studies, which has a center in London. These students take three courses at QMUL and their fourth course is the internship with placement provided by Arcadia. Placement options include: advertising; arts; business operations; film & television; accounting and entrepreneurship; hospitality; journalism; law; politics (including Parliament); marketing; non-governmental organizations; psychology; public relations; and theater.

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly in university courses open to visiting international students. Students take classes alongside local British and other international students.

Course Credit

Queen Mary uses a different credit and grading system than at Allegheny. Most classes (or “modules”) are normally worth 15 credits per semester and a full load of classes for a single semester is 60 credits.  Each 15-credit class at Queen Mary equals four Allegheny credits.  So, students can directly enroll in four courses of their choice throughout the curriculum each term for the Allegheny equivalent of 16 credits.

Semester 1 refers to the Fall term and Semester 2 refers to the Spring term. Also, look for courses in levels 4, 5, and 6, which are undergraduate courses at QMUL. Level 4 is an introductory university-level module (often equivalent to courses taken in the first and second years at Allegheny), level 5 is an intermediate university-level module (typically junior-level courses at Allegheny) and level 6 is an advanced university-level module, typically equivalent to advanced junior/senior year courses.

Housing & Student Life

Queen Mary prides itself on being a residential campus, like Allegheny, and houses students both on and near the Mile End Campus. All residences are within a maximum of five-minute walk of each other. Their accommodation offers comfortable, modern, self-catered flats. Self-catered means students living in them will not have a meal plan and will cook on their own in shared kitchens in addition to eating at a variety of cafes and restaurants on and near campus in Mile End. Students have easy access to food and grocery delivery services from local supermarkets. All rooms are singles and most have a private bathroom.  They’re grouped in flats of 4-6 students with a shared kitchen. Allegheny students will be placed in flats with UK and fellow international students.

John Cabot University

Eligibility

This program is open to students who are at least first-semester sophomores. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required to participate.

Where: Rome, Italy

Rome, the capital city of Italy, is known for its fascinating ancient history and architectural wonders like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, and the Vatican.  Rome has a little over 2.5 million inhabitants.  Allegheny’s study abroad partner in Rome, John Cabot University (JCU) is located in the heart of the Trastevere neighborhood with housing just a short walk away from the school and easy access to other parts of the city via public transit.

JCU has about 1,600 students in total; 50% of these students are degree-seeking students and the other 50% are visiting study-abroad students. JCU has students from 50 different countries around the world.

Academics

JCU is a Global Liberal Arts Alliance school (GLAA) and is one of the largest American liberal arts universities operating internationally. It focuses on being a small, student-centered school and stands out in a number of academic departments including business and economics, communications, psychology, art history, humanities, international affairs, and political science. 

The entire institution operates in English and JCU offers around 400 courses in the fall and spring.  They also offer an interesting for-credit research assistantship to students to give them an opportunity to deepen their research skills while conducting a more advanced research project in a specific disciplinary area. Faculty submit a request for research assistants to the Dean of Students office which then announces all projects to interested students so they can apply. 

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly in university courses open to visiting international students. Students take classes alongside local Italian and other international students. The class size averages about 15 students and the learning environment is meant to be similar to an American-style liberal arts education.

Course Credit

JCU uses the same credit system as Allegheny. So, three credits at JCU equals three credits at Allegheny.  The normal course load at the University is 15 credits per semester.

Housing & Student Life

The University has carefully selected housing locations close to the main campus buildings and in nearby residential areas that encourage students to integrate into the local community. At JCU, your academic environment is American, your surrounding community is Italian and your neighbors come from all over the world. Study abroad students can live in furnished JCU apartments located a short 5-15 minute walk from campus. Review all of JCU’s housing options.

Students have access to kitchens in their apartments and can grocery shop and cook for themselves. In addition, all students have the option of adding a meal plan at any time to eat at JCU’s Tiber Cafe.

Eligibility

This program is open to students who are at least first-semester sophomores. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to participate.

Where: Siena, Italy

Siena, located in the Italian region of Tuscany, is about one hour south of Florence and has around 50,000 inhabitants. Siena is known for its small-town feel, having a true sense of community, its medieval brick architecture, less spoken English than other more touristy areas of Italy, and the yearly Palio horse races. Siena is connected to cities like Florence and Rome via bus and train networks helping Siena be very well connected within Italy and the rest of Europe.  

CET Siena is a small program with about 25 students. On-site staff know who you are and you develop close connections with the other CET students in the program.

Academics

In Siena, all students take an Italian language class whether they’re complete beginners or advanced speakers. CET also offers intensive Italian language classes whereby students can complete two semester’s worth (8 credits) of Italian in one term.

In addition to language, students choose three or four other classes taught in English in the fields of Art History, Computer Science, Global Studies, Italian Studies,  Political Science, and International Relations. They typically have five computer science courses in Siena each semester. 

Academic Structure

Students enroll in classes from a select list of classes taught at the CET Center in Siena.  Class sizes are small and they are taken alongside other study abroad students in the programs from Allegheny and other US colleges and universities. Classes are taught in a US-style with interactive sessions and continuous assessment throughout the semester, including quizzes, midterms, and finals. All classes include at least one site visit per semester to a location within the city.

Course Credit

CET uses the same credit system as Allegheny. So, four credits at CET equals four credits at Allegheny.  The normal course load at the University is 12-18 credits per semester.  

Courses

In addition to language, art history, Italian studies, global studies, Political Science, and international relations coursework, this program is unique in its offering of five computer sciences courses.  These have been reviewed by Allegheny’s Computer and Information Science Department and can be transferred as CMPSC courses at Allegheny. The computer sciences courses typically offered each semester are:

  • CS3120 Discrete Mathematics and Theory 2
  • CS3130 Computer Systems and Organization 2
  • CS4414 Operating Systems
  • CS4710 Artificial Intelligence

Housing & Student Life

In Siena, students have the option of a homestay or apartments with local Italian roommates from the local Sienese university.  Students who live in the apartment option in Siena live in double rooms with other CET students and one local roommate.  The local CET staff manages all housing facilities and issues from roommate placements to apartment maintenance, etc.  Students in apartments typically live in doubles (though singles, when requested in advance for medical or personal reasons, can be arranged) with 2-6 other students. In apartments, students cook and grocery shop or eat out on their own and/or with their roommates. Students have access to washing machines but since dryers are not common in Italy, students typically hang clothes to dry on large drying racks. 

In a homestay, students live in single or double rooms with another CET student. Students living in a homestay eat breakfasts and dinners with their host family and lunch on their own as they’re out and about during the day. The homestay program carries an extra fee to cover the cost of an extra member of the household.

The program also includes a three-day overnight trip 3-day excursion to the Emilia Romagna region. Visit FICO Eataly World and immerse yourself in Italian food in Bologna. Spend the day taking in beautiful Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna. Visit an Acetaia and understand the art of making balsamic vinegar. Check out the Ferrari Museum before returning home to Siena.  In addition, at least one optional extracurricular activity per week is arranged for students by the Italian roommates/buddies that could include, for example: dinner with Italian friends, cooking classes (pizza, stracciatella), tours to places of interest in Siena, etc.

Eligibility

Where: Florence, Italy

Florence, the hub of the region of Tuscany, is three hours northwest of Rome and has around 350,000 inhabitants. It is famous for its stunning Duomo cathedral, Ponte Vecchio, and world-class art museums, as well as being the birthplace of the Renaissance, having an interesting political history with the rule of the powerful Medici family, and being a very international city nowadays. Florence has a major international airport and Italy’s bus and train systems make it well connected within Italy and with the rest of Europe.

CET Florence typically hosts 150-200 students from US colleges and universities.  The main CET Florence building is located in Oltrarno (literally meaning “across the Arno” i.e. the Arno river) just over one of the many bridges in Florence. It’s on a charming, quiet street, in a safe neighborhood, but still just a 15-minute walk to the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, and the heart of the city. The office has two floors (ground floor and second floor) with a front desk reception area for informational and security purposes, offices for program staff, a lounge for professors, many classrooms of different sizes, and spaces for students to gather.

Academics

In Florence, all students take an Italian language class whether they’re complete beginners or advanced speakers. After that, it’s up to each individual student to select what works for them—check required classes off your list or try something new and uniquely Italian. 

In addition to language, students choose three or four other classes taught in English in the fields of Art & Art History, Business, Finance, & Marketing, Economics, Italian Studies, History, Political Science, International Relations, and Psychology. There are typically about 20-25 courses available each term.

Academics at DIS are separated into 11 different programs – each one of the Programs focuses on a specific academic field or discipline. Your Program at DIS is determined by your choice of a Core Course (you choose only one). Core Courses include a week-long Program Study Tour to a European destination and a Core Course Week, comprised of a two-day seminar in Stockholm and a three-day short Study Tour. Both Study Tours are faculty-led and integrated into the core course curriculum. Once you have chosen your Core Course, and therefore Program, you are free to choose from the diverse elective courses on offer across 50+ disciplines.

Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, is a vibrant and historic urban center known for its charming blend of old-world charm and modern innovation. Nestled on the eastern coast of Zealand, flanked by the sparkling waters of the Baltic Sea, Copenhagen is famous for its picturesque canals, cobblestone streets, and colorful buildings.

Academics

DIS offers over 340 courses across 28 programs, making it easy for you to study abroad while keeping up with your academics, or allowing you to explore new topics during your time abroad. Courses emphasize place-based learning through Field Studies which take you out of the classroom to position academic topics within real life scenarios. Your Core Course also includes two faculty-led Study Tours to further contextualize your understanding of topics while in a relevant European destination.

For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Visa Information

U.S citizens need to apply for a residence permit for their study abroad period in Denmark. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their home country’s Denmark embassy or consulate. All international students must register with the local immigration authorities during the first few weeks after their arrival in Denmark.

Fees & Costs

Below find information on estimated costs for a semester abroad. You will receive a bill from Allegheny College, as you normally would, for the amount shown under “Costs Paid to Allegheny College.” All other study away program costs will be paid directly to a non-Allegheny entity and are listed in part two below. These amounts are estimates and will vary depending on individual choices. A total estimated cost of attendance for this program is shown at the bottom.

Part One: Costs Paid to Allegheny College

Tuition (12 to 20 credits)
Students do not pay tuition directly to DIS. Instead, students continue to pay tuition to Allegheny College. This covers tuition at DIS.		 $27,930

– Students pay the Independent Living rate to Allegheny which covers housing in Copenhagen		 $4,430

Depending on housing option, some meals or a food stipend is included:
– In the homestay, most meals are included during scheduled class weeks

La Bella Figura – Italy Then and Now

The small, walled hill town of Amelia, one of the oldest in Italy, is the course’s starting point, where students will live with families for one week and study Italian intensively at Eurolinks, a local language school.  Time is also devoted to learning about Italian customs, mores, and manners first-hand through a range of activities and field trips.

Next, students spend three days in Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance.  After Florence we head south to Naples, one of Italy’s oldest cities, to begin thinking about the classical past.  Our time includes a day-long excursion to Pompeii and to the top of Mount Vesuvius.  From Naples we travel to the island of Capri, one of the world’s most historically significant destinations.  The trip concludes with six days in Rome, where students deepen their familiarity with late Medieval and Renaissance history, as well as the classical traditions. Sustained units in Florence, Naples, and Rome focus on Italy as a complex and politicized destination for immigrants.

Students who successfully complete this course will earn four Allegheny credits.

Cost

  1. $1,200: Non-refundable reservation fee; due after program admission in November 2023.
  2. $8,816*: Tuition rate TBC (summer 2023 tuition was $2,206/credit); due March 31, 2024. *ESTIMATED – final cost will be posted November 2023

Students will receive an $2,000 GL Scholarship. Students may also be eligible for additional need-based grants in the amounts of $1,000 or $2,500. Please note: Graduating seniors who participate in the program are not eligible to receive institutional financial aid nor are students who have already studied abroad.

The Reverend and Mrs. Berges International Fund supports international students here on campus, semester long study away students, and GL Seminar participants. Students must 1) have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial aid office and 2) Have never studied away previously.  If you meet these requirements, apply now.

Students are encouraged to apply for externally funded scholarships. Those who receive the federal Pell Grant are eligible for the Gilman Scholarship. Contact Student Success (814-332-2898) for support.
