Where: Stockholm, Sweden

Famous for its progressive stance on equality and human rights, Stockholm offers you the perfect balance of history and modern living in serene surroundings. If you choose Stockholm as your home, your classroom will be in a state-of-the-art modern glass building right in the city center. From here, you can easily explore the strikingly beautiful capital that’s brimming with lively culture, ahead-of-its-time design, and friendly people. Enjoy the Swedish democratic concept that nature belongs to everyone, allemansrätten. This unique right allows you to roam freely in the countryside. Explore Stockholm’s archipelago with 30,000 islands, go cross-country skiing, or pick berries and mushrooms like the locals.

Academics

Academics at DIS are separated into 11 different programs – each one of the Programs focuses on a specific academic field or discipline. Your Program at DIS is determined by your choice of a Core Course (you choose only one). Core Courses include a week-long Program Study Tour to a European destination and a Core Course Week, comprised of a two-day seminar in Stockholm and a three-day short Study Tour. Both Study Tours are faculty-led and integrated into the core course curriculum. Once you have chosen your Core Course, and therefore Program, you are free to choose from the diverse elective courses on offer across 50+ disciplines.

Course Credit

The credit structure at DIS mirrors most North American institutions. Most courses are three credits, while a few carry one or six credits. Semester students must take a minimum of 12 credits. No more than 15 credits may come from a combination of three- or six-credit courses.

Housing & Student Life

Unless otherwise advised by your home institution, you have several housing options to choose from at DIS Stockholm. All options ensure that you live with English speakers. You are encouraged to maximize your exposure to Swedish culture and language during the semester, no matter what your housing preference. The housing options include: Homestay, Living & Learning Community, Studentboende, and Residential Community. Most of the living options provide some form of a meal plan or food stipend, however, students are frequently expected to cook several of their meals themselves. Students have easy access to food and grocery delivery services from local supermarkets. From board game nights to bonfires and community dinners, New in Town meetups take place during the first weeks of the semester, and provide an opportunity to experience the city with other DIS students while socializing as the locals do!

Application Process

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Check directly on their website (linked at the top of this page) for deadline information. For more information about the study away application process, please visit the application steps page.

Visa Information

U.S. citizens need to apply for a resident permit for their study abroad period in Sweden. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their home country’s Swedish embassy or consulate. DIS will help all students with this visa/permit process but it is the student’s responsibility to apply for the visa.
