The 1918 Pandemic and its legacy in relation to
Pittsburgh, Meadville, and Covid 19

Abstract:

The 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic has a legacy of being forgotten even purposefully to some extent. Is this correct or an oversimplification of events? In this text the author analyzes well known sources as well as those pertaining to Pittsburgh and Meadville Pennsylvania in order to determine in what way 1918 is truly forgotten. This is a discussion on the legacy of 1918 and how it affected modern diseases such as Covid 19. Primary as well as historiographical sources indicate that even at a time in which the press was being pressured to underestimate the effects of 1918, there was still a dialogue about what it was and what could be done. Even if the first world war often overshadows the 1918 pandemic, the idea that it was purposefully forgotten is flawed even at a base level.
