The 2018 Allegheny International Film Festival, sponsored by the Department of Modern & Classical Languages, continues on Wednesday, February 21, with “Julieta” from Spain. Showtime is 7 p.m. at The Movies at Meadville, 11155 Highline Drive, Meadville PA 16335. All films are free and open to the public. Free round-trip shuttle service is provided for the Allegheny community, departing North Main Street at Brooks Walk at 6:10 and 6:30 p.m.

The young adulthood and middle age of Julieta, the heroine of Pedro Almodóvar’s new movie, are shadowed by death and abandonment, which she does her best to handle gracefully. Mr. Almodóvar, for his part, tells her story with his characteristic later-period blend of elegant restraint and keening melodrama. “Julieta” is scrupulous, compassionate and surprising, even if it does not always quite communicate the full gravity and sweep of the feelings it engages. — A.O.
