The February talk in the Karl W. Weiss ’87 Faculty Lecture Series will be held on Wednesday, February 6, at 7 p.m. in Campus Center 301/302. Benjamin Haywood, assistant professor of environmental science, will present “Citizen Science, Civic Action, and the Power of Place.”

The current pace and scale of environmental change in the 21st century presents substantial challenges to global economic, social, and ecological systems. Addressing these challenges requires an informed and engaged citizenry, one that is scientifically literate and able to understand and respond to information about a range of important social and environmental issues. In this presentation, Haywood shares findings from his research on a nationally recognized citizen science program (COASST) that suggests that feelings of connection to specific places of meaning, intentional exploration and investigation of those places, and understanding of complex socio-ecological systems and science concepts may all be linked. By exploring potential relationships between place-based citizen science, higher-order thinking skills, and civic action, Haywood will discuss the unique ways through which citizen science can increase scientific and environmental literacy among global citizens in “everyday” informal spaces outside of the classroom.
