Students of Communication Arts 376 will present the fourth season of the Meadiaville Listening Project, “Lake Effect Love: Relationships in the Rust Belt,” at a listening party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, December 9, at the Firehouse Tap and Grille in Meadville, 875 Park Ave. The event will showcase the semester-long project in which Allegheny students explored the dating culture in Meadville through ethnographic studies. Appetizers and refreshments will be provided.

The Meadiaville Listening Project was created by Professor Emily Yochim in 2016, and has been a continuing and evolving project ever since. The goal of the project is to hone in on one aspect of life in Meadville; work, politics, love, etc.; to qualitatively explore the town we all call home. Throughout the fall 2019 semester, students have studied and practiced ethnographic methods, interviewed community members, and ultimately produced a podcast to explore stories of dating and relationship building in Meadville. In “Lake Effect Love,” students and more than a dozen interviewees discuss everything from the concrete experience of dating in Meadville — focusing on the places people go on dates and the advantages and disadvantages of dating in the area compared to others — to the social and cultural forces that may or may not be seen, but people still encounter as they date: presenting oneself on dating applications and websites, financial instability, ideological differences, substance abuse in the Rust Belt.
Attendees will be invited to not only listen to the four podcasts students made, but also explore the corresponding webpage and supplemental projects. The event will feature different ways to explore Meadville’s dating atmosphere: Come check out various informational pieces about popular dating spots, music, and experiences in the town.
Students in Communication Arts 376 have worked to produce a meaningful, holistic study of dating in Meadville, and are excited for the opportunity to share their work with the community!
