Professor Xiaoling Shi is offering WLC 390 Special Topics Asian American Film and Video at 1:30–3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Module 2, Spring 2022. This 4-credit course fulfills the distribution requirements of ME and PD. It studies Asian American films and stories as a genre closely tied to political and social events and issues from the early 20th century to the present. By investigating representations of Asians and Asian Americans in the genre, students catch a glimpse of Asian American history — immigration, assimilation, and struggle against institutional racism, locate the themes, styles, and perspectives, and grasp the complexity of intersections of race, class, gender and sexuality. While the course primarily focuses on interpreting and discussing existing movies/video, students are encouraged to create their own personal stories using various forms of digital media as the final project for the course.
