The topic for SPAN 350 “Topics in Hispanic Culture” in Spring 2023 is the study of indigenous and gay communities in Latin America. Students study the biography and history of Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú from Guatemala; Evo Morales, the first indigenous president of Bolivia; and Reinaldo Arenas, a gay Cuban writer exiled in the United States. The readings are supplemented with viewing documentaries and feature films in Spanish. If you have taken 2 Spanish courses at the 200-level or speak Spanish as a native or heritage language, you can use this class to count toward a Spanish Major or Minor, Latin American Studies Minor, a Global Health Studies language course, or to fill an HE or IP distribution requirement. Contact Professor Wilfredo Hernández at whernand@allegheny.edu if you have any questions or have trouble registering for the class in Self Service.
