Photography

Compelling photography plays a vital role in conveying the Allegheny story to our key audiences. Powerful images can, in an instant, communicate the vibrancy of campus life and the impact of an Allegheny education. Allegheny is a beautiful, vibrant place, and photography provides an excellent opportunity to showcase our campus environment.

To that end, the Office of Marketing and Communications cultivates its photo library throughout the year, including images taken by employees, students, and professional freelance photographers hired by the College, as well as submitted photos. The collection includes:

  • Academics
  • Student life (e.g. residence life, clubs)
  • Campus beauty, architecture and environment
  • Annual events (e.g. Commencement, Reunion Weekend)
  • Featured story portraits and images
  • Employee headshots

Style and Approach

Our goal is to capture and share photographs that reflect the voice and tone of the College. These images help to convey the College’s standing as one of the nation’s most distinguished — and innovative — liberal arts colleges.

Effective use of color, composition, focus, and technique is vital to creating high quality imagery. In addition, attention is especially given to the following aspects when capturing photography:

  • Accuracy in all details, sharing the experiences of our students, faculty, staff, alumni and other community members
  • Relevance of location to subject
  • In-the-moment, authentic events
  • The College’s commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Specific references to Allegheny and campus

Requests

Photography requests may be submitted via the Marketing and Communications Project Request Form and are considered on a case-by-case basis. Marketing and Communications is most interested in capturing images that both meet the needs of the client and can also be used for marketing purposes. This includes, in general:

  • Academic experiences (e.g. classroom, lab, studying, group discussion)
  • Student life (e.g. interaction at events, residence life, clubs and orgs.)
  • Small group interaction
  • Photos related to campus
  • Photos related to traditions/annual events
  • Employee headshots

Submitting photos

When choosing to provide images for a project, the following considerations should be made:

  • Photography style as noted above
  • Student permissions should be verified by one of these means, in order of preference: Allegheny photo release, via email
  • RAW files are preferred file format

Multimedia Releases

Any current Allegheny student may complete the official Allegheny multimedia release via the online form. Others may download the print Photo and Video/Multimedia Consent and Release form and return the original, completed version to the Office of Marketing and Communications, Box 40.
