Issues with Campus Phone System

Representatives from LITS and Windstream are currently investigating intermittent issues with campus phones. Please do not unplug your phone, as this may cause it to become unresponsive. Users have reported that the display time is incorrect, but this should not otherwise affect functionality of the phone. Thank you for your patience.

Scheduled Maintenance – Phone System

On Thursday, February 3, from 8:00 p.m to 2:00 a.m., Windstream will conduct scheduled maintenance on the main campus phone system.  No outage is expected, but there is a possibility that the phone system may be down intermittently throughout the 90-minute maintenance window.

If there is an outage, incoming calls will not be received and outgoing calls will not complete a connection. In case of emergency, Public Safety can be reached during the phone outage at 814-332-2314 instead of their usual number.

Please note that you must use a non-Allegheny College phone, such as a cell phone, to reach this number during any outage. Campus phones will not be able to complete any outgoing calls during the outage.

Scheduled Campus Phone System Maintenance

In order to address miscellaneous recent issues with Allegheny’s VOIP phone system, our phone service provider has advised a reboot of the system, scheduled for Monday morning, February 3, at 7:00 am.

This reboot would affect all desk phones on campus. The outage is expected to last about ten minutes.

Fax service, alarm dialers, and emergency phones should not be affected during the outage.

If you are still experiencing any disruption of campus phone service after 7:20 am, please contact the InfoDesk immediately by email at infodesk@allegheny.edu.

Telephone phishing attempts

Recently LITS has been receiving reports of phone calls and voicemails from a number that appears to be local. The caller, often just a recording, requests Google account information and sometimes threatens the recipient with deactivation of the Google account. They are very similar in style and intent to email phishing attempts.

These calls are not legitimate and can be safely ignored. Delete any voicemails from such callers as well.

It’s wise never to give out your password over the phone or share it with anyone, regardless of who they claim to be. And it’s important to be very judicious what other information you choose to give out over the phone. If you are at all unsure of the legitimacy of the call, hang up immediately and do not accept further calls from the same number.

LITS will never ask for your password, and all communication from LITS is made using official Allegheny College channels, such as the Allegheny College phone system or @allegheny.edu email.

As always, feel free to contact the InfoDesk at x3768 with any questions or concerns, or open a Web Help Desk ticket..
