Allegheny Creative & Performing Arts Scholarships

Thank you for your interest in the Allegheny Creative & Performing Arts Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based upon a student’s intended level of participation and performance ability. Students who plan to major or minor in a creative or performing art are eligible, as are those who plan to participate in related extracurricular performances and/or take courses in the department (specific criteria is outlined below). The Award is $1000 and is renewable based upon continued participation.

Submission Deadline
Submissions are for students that plan to enroll at Allegheny in Fall 2023. Students may only apply for one scholarship.

The deadline for submitting a scholarship application is January 31, 2023. Spaces are limited, so submit your scholarship application today!

Dance & Movement Studies

Dance and movement studies includes dance as well as yoga, Asian martial arts such as tang so do, tai chi, and aikido.

The Allegheny College Dance & Movement Studies Scholarships are awarded based upon a student’s intended level of participation and performance ability. Students who plan to minor in dance & movement studies are eligible, as are those who plan to participate in Dance & Movement Studies sponsored dance ensembles, but have majors and minors outside of dance. The Award is $1000 and is renewable based upon continued participation.

The required evaluation components are:
1) 1-page letter of intent, focused on how applicant sees dance and movement practices as part of a liberal arts education;
2) Resume of dance and movement experience or practice;
3) Web-based or telephone interview (10-15 minutes);
4) A clear video of the applicant dancing.

Scholarship recipients must enroll in at least one Dance & Movement course during the first year (scholarship recipients are guaranteed a spot in one of these courses during the first year) and
regular participation in Dance & Movement productions (at least once per year in any production role, provided productions occur due to physical distancing guidelines).

Music

The Allegheny College Music Scholarships are awarded based upon a student’s intended level of participation and performance ability. Any student who plans to participate in instrumental or vocal ensembles is eligible, regardless of major or minor. The Award is $1000 and is renewable based upon continued participation.

Students are required to send/upload video recordings, or links to video recordings, of themselves performing their audition repertoire. Recordings must include both audio and video; professional recordings are not necessary, but the submissions should be of sufficient quality to be representative of your sound and allow for visual recognition should you eventually come to campus. This can be done on the form.

Instrumental students should prepare two contrasting selections, or two movements from a larger work. Solos that have been prepared for assessments or concerts are acceptable. Students may also be asked to play scales. Vocalists should select two pieces from the classical repertoire of art song, opera, oratorio, or folk music. Selections should highlight the singer’s best range and two different languages.

Studio Art

Recipients are encouraged to enroll in at least one 100-level Studio Art or Art & Technology course (ART 151, 155, 156, 165, 171, 181, 185) during their first year and participate actively in Student Art Society and/or BOXX Gallery activities and events.

The required evaluation components are:
1) 1-page letter of intent focused on how applicant sees their work in the Visual Arts as part of a liberal arts education;
2) Resume of Arts experiences;
3) Documentation of three Art-making experiences which may include: high quality jpg images of 2-D or 3-D artworks made by the applicant with descriptive captions stating the dimensions, medium(s)(e.g. drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, sculpture, ceramics, etc.), date completed, and title of work; evidence of participation in a community Arts project (documentation via high quality jpg photographs of the project and descriptive captions explaining the applicant’s role); YouTube or Vimeo links to videos created by the applicant, and online links to interactive or iterative technology-based projects (e.g. games, bots, pages/sites, etc…).

Theatre

Thank you for your interest in studying and participating in Theatre at Allegheny College.

The Allegheny College Theatre Scholarships are awarded based upon a student’s intended level of participation and ability. Students who plan to major or minor in Theatre are eligible, as are those who plan to participate in co-curricular productions in the Playshop Theatre but have majors and minors outside of Theatre. The Award is $1000 and is renewable based upon continued participation.

Evaluation components are:
1) 1-page letter of intent, focused on how applicant sees their work in theatre as part of a liberal arts education;
2) Resume highlighting theatre experience;
3) Video conference interview (20 minutes) and;
4) Evidence of theatre experience, which may include: Acting (2 minute monologue or two 1-minute monologues), Design & Production (digital copies of drawings or production photos), Directing & Management (prompt book or brief performance video), and/or Dramaturgy (research and analysis about a play).

Scholarship recipients should enroll in at least one 100-level Theatre course (COMRT 130, 150, 180) during the first year (scholarship recipients are guaranteed a spot in one of these courses during the first semester) and regularly participate in Playshop Theatre productions (at least once per year, provided productions occur due to physical distancing guidelines).
