Course Scheduling Guidelines

The following guidelines are designed to help balance the needs and desires of programs, faculty, and students.

Official Time Blocks for Course Scheduling
MWF for 50 minutes: start times are 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 am; 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 pm;
MW, MF, or WF for 75 minutes: start times are 11:00 am; or
TTh for 75 minutes: start times are 8:00, 9:30, 11:00 am; 1:30, 3:00 pm
Approved Non-Standard Time Blocks for Course Scheduling
MTWThF 12:30-1:20 pm or 1:00-1:50 pm for 50 minute courses or 12:30-1:45 pm or 1:00-2:15 pm for 75 minute classes; or
MW, MF, or WF, between 3:30 and 4:45 pm
  • Wherever practically and pedagogically appropriate, courses should be scheduled in the “official time blocks for course scheduling” listed above.
  • Classes may be taught over the lunch period if there are other sections of the same course that do not meet between 12:30 and 1:30 or if the course to be scheduled is an elective that is one choice among several for student to complete their requirements.
  • Classes should generally not be taught between 4:30 and 7:00 p.m., which is the time reserved for athletics practice. 75 minute classes may be taught 3:30 – 4:45 pm on MWF only if there are other sections of the same course that meet before 4:30 pm or if the course to be scheduled is an elective that is one choice among several for student to complete their requirements.
  • Scheduling courses after 7 p.m. is permissible. Courses with occasional evening meetings (e.g., for viewing films) should include the evening time in the class schedule so students can avoid time conflicts with other College activities when selecting classes.
  • Laboratories and studio classes should be scheduled to start at the standard times but may extend over multiple periods. Please schedule these courses to minimize time conflicts with other classes as much as possible.

  • “Freshman Seats”: you can designate courses to be reserved for students with FR standing. These will not be visible on Self-Service until the FR students begin registering. For example, if you assign a total course capacity of 30 with 10 FR seats, only 20 seats will be visible on Self-Service during senior, junior, and sophomore registration.
  • “Signature Courses”: any course designated “signature” requires the instructor’s permission, i.e., students will not be able to add the course themselves on Self-Service. Senior Projects and Independent Studies are assumed to be signature courses unless you request otherwise.
