Registration Timeline

The overall structure of registration

  1. Pre-registration — Seniors begin to register in Week 11 of the Fall semester and Week 12 of the Spring semester. In turn, and by letter group, seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen (in that order), have the opportunity to register online.
    • Courses that are restricted to “Permission of the instructor” or “Signature” will need instructor approval before you register.
    • Students may register for up to 18 credits during this time.
    • Students will not be able to register for closed classes or for classes for which they lack the appropriate class year restrictions.
    • If a student has a financial hold or lacks advisor approval, they will not be able to register.
  2. All College Change Period
    • Courses that are restricted to “Permission of the instructor” or “Signature” will need instructor approval before you register.
    • Course restrictions may change during this period from what they were during pre-registration.
    • Students will not be able to register for closed classes or for classes for which they lack the appropriate class year restrictions.
    • Over Winter Break, students may continue to register.
    • Over Summer Break, registration will be closed to continuing students in mid-summer so that new first year students may register.
    • If a student has a financial hold or lacks advisor approval, they will not be able to register.
  3. Early Semester Add/Drop — Beginning on the first day of Fall and Spring classes, and during the first two weeks of the semester, students may continue to add and drop eligible courses online.
    • ALL course adds will require the consent of the instructor.
    • Students will be able to register for closed classes or for classes for which they lack the appropriate class year restrictions, so long as the instructor approves.
    • Students who wish to enroll in more than 20 credits must follow the Course Overload process.
    • Course restrictions may change during this period from what they were during pre-registration or during the all-college change period.
    • If a student has a financial hold or lacks advisor approval, they will not be able to register.
    • The end of Early Semester Add/Drop is a hard deadline. All students MUST be correctly registered for classes by the end of this period.
      • Students who are not correctly registered by this deadline will need to use the Dean’s Exemption process to try and adjust their schedules. Please be aware that this process is not “automatic” – some requests are denied. The Committee considers each petition on a case-by-case basis.
  4. First-Year Course Registration — during two weeks in July or August new students are assisted with their first registration cycle by specialized advisors. This takes place over the telephone.
  5. Special CoursesModule B courses and Short Courses may have different registration cycles.
  6. Overloads — Students are restricted to a total of 18 credits until all continuing students have had the chance to register. Students may register for up to 20 credits for Spring at the end of the Fall pre-registration period and may register for up to 20 credits for Fall after First-Year Course Registration in July. Students may register for 21 credits or more at the start of the semester in August or January. The overload form will be available during Early Semester Add/Drop each semester.
